At Life Skills Karate in Orem, Utah, we recently celebrated a truly historic moment — the first-ever black belt test since opening our dojo in 2019.
This milestone represents not only years of dedication and perseverance from the students but also the long-term benefits that martial arts training and life skills can bring to families and our community.
The First Black Belt Journey
On Saturday, our students — and my own children — Jaxon and Kali stepped onto the mat for a challenge that would push their limits and showcase everything they’ve learned over the years.
The 3-hour black belt test included:
Hundreds of martial arts movements and kick combinations
Self-defense scenarios
Traditional forms and weapons combinations
And, something special — their own Life Skill presentations
As part of their test, Jaxon and Kali each chose two vocabulary words to explore, breaking down the deeper meaning of the words and sharing how to think critically about them. They showed how to use words wisely and dissolve the illusions that sometimes come with them. Watching them teach their peers was powerful — and a reminder that martial arts is as much about the mind and heart as it is about the body.
The Long-Term Benefits of Martial Arts Training
At Life Skills Karate, we believe that martial arts is more than learning to punch and kick. Our program helps students develop skills that last a lifetime:
Discipline and perseverance: staying committed even when things get tough
Focus and confidence: learning to stay present and push through challenges
Respect and responsibility: for themselves, others, and the community
Goal-setting and growth mindset: understanding that progress comes with consistent effort
The black belt journey isn’t a finish line — it’s a new chapter in the ongoing path of learning and self-improvement.
Community Makes the Difference
Moments like this don’t happen alone. I want to recognize Kortnie, whose steady support for our dojo and our family has been essential in helping Jaxon and Kali reach this milestone and in elevating Life Skills Karate as a whole.
A big thanks also goes to Mark, who stepped in during the test as the “bad guy” — taking the hits, holding targets, and providing strong encouragement when it mattered most.
Martial arts training works best in a positive, supportive community, and this milestone shows just how important that is.
Celebrating This Achievement
Jaxon and Kali will officially receive their black belts this Friday at 5:00 PM in a special ceremony at our dojo.Seating is limited due to our small space, so we’re asking families to RSVP to reserve their seats by contacting us at 801-224-0529 or through our website.
