Joy Doesn’t Require Calm Water
One of the things we work on in our kids martial arts classes is learning how to handle life when things don’t go exactly the way we want. That might mean struggling with a new technique, dealing with frustration, working with different partners, making mistakes, or simply having a day where everything feels a little harder than usual.

A lot of the time we think joy comes after life settles down. After the stressful week. After the kids stop fighting. After the house is clean. After the schedule gets easier. After the water finally becomes calm.
But that’s not usually how life works.
Joy is often found right in the middle of the mess. It’s learning to surf while laughing at the wave. It’s being in a canoe full of groceries during a storm and realizing somebody forgot the paddle. It’s your moment of enlightenment getting interrupted because you tripped over the laundry basket.
Sometimes the universe even sends wisdom disguised as a kid throwing up in the Target parking lot.
The goal isn’t to pretend frustrating things aren’t frustrating. It’s learning that a hard, messy, ridiculous moment doesn’t have to take everything else down with it.
At Life Skills Karate, we see these little moments all the time. A student may be learning a new kick, form, self-defense technique, or combination and feel completely clunky. Their brain understands what they’re supposed to do, but their body hasn’t figured it out yet.
That’s actually a great opportunity to practice some important life skills:
🥋 Humility: “I’m not very good at this yet.”
🌊 Curiosity: “What can I change or try differently?”
😂 Joy: “This is kind of ridiculous right now, and that’s okay.”
🔥 Persistence: Keep working. Keep practicing. Keep paddling.
These same skills matter far beyond martial arts. Kids use them at school, with siblings, with friends, while learning new things, handling mistakes, and dealing with situations that don’t feel fair or easy. Adults need them too.
Life is going to hand us plenty of messy moments. Sometimes we respond well. Sometimes we overreact. Sometimes we laugh. Sometimes we have to clean up the mess and try again.
Joy doesn’t require calm water. Sometimes it simply means getting better at riding the water we already have.
One phrase we talked about this month was:
Earth gives you the mess. Heaven is the frequency. Practice brings them together.
We don’t always control what shows up in front of us, but we can practice the attitude, effort, humor, and perspective we bring into it.
That’s one of the reasons martial arts can be such a powerful training ground for kids. The mat gives them a place to practice frustration, confidence, resilience, discipline, humility, and persistence in small ways before those same lessons show up somewhere else in life.
Sometimes you paddle smoothly.
Sometimes you paddle in circles.
Sometimes somebody forgot the paddle.
Either way, we keep going.
At Life Skills Karate in Orem, Utah, our goal is to help kids build skills that go beyond punches, kicks, and forms. We want them to become more confident, capable, resilient, and ready to handle the real-life waves that come their way.
The Mat Is Practice for Life.
